Star Wars Galaxies Legends has a major update for 2026

The Star Wars Galaxies project officially ceased to exist in 2011.
Apparently, no one reported this to those involved in its maintenance.
SWG Legends has released a massive development update scheduled for August 2026 and this is not one of those community server patches where someone changes three item drop options and color of the headdress. The update brings back the Battle of Restuss, rewrites some of its PvP structure, adds new rewards, modernizes the client, expands bounty hunting, and quietly upgrades the underlying server architecture to 64-bit.
For a game released in 2003, that last sentence requires a pause.
Restuss is back - and now it's more focused on PvP.
The main feature is the return of the Battle of Restuss, one of the most important events of the Galactic Civil War, in Star Wars Galaxies.
This version places much more emphasis on real battles between players.
The old NPC Kill quest has been replaced by a Special Ops Kill Quest, requiring players to kill other players in Restuss. The Space Kill Mission has also become a PvP activity, and only kills in Deep Space count towards progress.Artisans also have a new path through the event: victories in Restuss Flashpoint have replaced the previous part 2 quest for crafting items.
Empire and Rebel Restuss Traders are now available at all stages of the battle, and the event brings new permanent rewards and badges.
In other words, Restuss became much less interested in whether he could effectively kill NPCs, and much more interested in whether he could effectively kill his neighbors.
Very Star Wars: Galaxies style.
The 2003 online multiplayer game will receive an in-game overhaul in 2026.
The most interesting part of the update may be hidden much further in the notes.
SWG Legends has updated itsserver architecture to 64-bit.
Terrain generation has become multi-threaded, the AI pathfinding algorithm has received what the team says is a massive optimization, and the placement of vegetation is now deterministic, meaning players should see vegetation in the same places. Various issues with shadows and shaders have also been fixed.
These are not some flashy additions.
Nobody makes trailers where heroic orchestral music swells as the server process gains access to more address space.
But they tell us something important about what SWG Legends has become.
This is no longer just a project to keep an old executable file running.
The team is actively upgrading the equipment underneath it.
The interface is pulled into the present.
The client himself receives a number of quality of life improvements that would have seemed reasonable in 2003 and have become increasingly necessary twenty-three years later.
Resolution, refresh rate, display mode and interface scale can now be changed directly in the game without restarting the client.Search by inventory, datapad and options, as well as filtering by type, have been added, and collections can now be tracked directly on the HUD in a style inspired by the pre-Combat Upgrade interface.
Additional toolbar slots and various fixes have also been added to prevent UI elements from leaving the screen when display settings are changed.
It's amazing how luxurious a search box can seem until you spend twenty years sorting through the contents of bags inside other bags.
Bounty hunters now have more reasons for unpleasant behavior.
Bounty hunting has also undergone significant changes.
Potentially inaccessible targets can now be marked as“Lurking,”which helps hunters avoid missions against players who are actually impossible to reach. Several new weekly leaderboards track total targets killed, unique targets, and reward values in both ground and space missions.
Death also becomes a little more vengeful.
Players can now place a bounty not only on the person who killed them, but also on the players who assisted in the murder.
This is an excellent system because nothing improves social relations like professional subcontracting of revenge.
And there's a whole bunch of new stuff.
This update adds dozens of rewards from merchants on Restuss, Bespin, Hoth, Galactic Civil War and other systems.
Restuss alone receives 14 new items from merchants, including a new heavy electric weapon, and Wandering Trader Uribar receives 21 additions. The Bespin Holographic Arena is getting a reward system in the form of rotating Champion Tokens, and numerous ships, creatures, professions and dungeons are getting their own changes.
The full list of changes is huge.
That's why this update is so important.
Star Wars Galaxies is turning into something it was never meant to be.
There is a difference between keeping an old game and developing it further.
In SWG Legends this line was crossed a long time ago.
Star Wars Galaxies has been officially dead for almost as long as it has been officially alive, but its community is still restoring systems, adding content, and improving technology that Sony Online Entertainment never imagined would work in 2026.
This allows projects like SWG Legends to go beyond simply expressing nostalgia.
These are alternative histories.
Somewhere on December 15, 2011, the show of Star Wars Galaxies ended.
Apparently, a 64-bit update was recently released here.
