George Lucas talks about the Star Wars trilogy that Disney abandoned
George Lucas began his career with the filmsGalaxy THX-1138andAmerican Graffiti, followed byStar Warsand their sequels. They were the ones who opened Hollywood's eyes to the potential of franchises.
In fact, after Graffiti, a film released 53 years ago, Lucas never directed a single non-Star Wars project. He didn’t have the slightest desire to create something original.
Lucas gave an extensive interview to CBS Sunday Morning. The creator of the most popular universe in the history of cinema said that he had retired, with three more films planned.
“I’m 82 years old, so there’s a limit to everything,” Lucas said. Instead of paintings, he chose to create his own museum.
We are not talking about any new projects. Lucas is talking about his own versions of Episodes VII, VIII and IX, a trilogy he began developing before Lucasfilm was sold to Disney in 2012. He has already negotiated with the actors. Kathleen Kennedy confirmed that Lucas was in contact with Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill even before she took over the studio. Disney acquired the company along with his script ideas, but decided to abandon the ideas.
At that time, Lucas was 69 years old. Another trilogy would mean that he would devote another ten years of his life to it. Instead, he chose his young daughter and the museum. He called the abandonment ofStar Warsa “very, very painful” step, and also admitted that he expected more influence on the creative process of creating the sequels.
So what would his trilogy look like?
In fact, no one knows this, since the plan was constantly changing. Lucas once spoke of plans to explore the "microbiotic world" of the Force, mentioning Darth Maul and his apprentice Darth Talon. The villains had to gain strength in the criminal underground while Leia restored the Republic and Luke restored the new Jedi Order.
Pablo Hidalgo said that in the 2012 drafts, Luke was depicted as a hermit overcome by despair, and died in Episode VIII. Hamill has different memories. The actor said that Luke should have trained Leia and lived until Episode IX.
Already in 2024, Lucas noted that Disney did not take advantage of his ideas after he sold them Lucasfilm studio in 2012 for $4 billion.

I was the one who truly understood what Star Wars was... who really knew this world, because there is so much in it. Let's take the Force for example - no one understood what it was. When new films began to be made after the sale of the company, many of the ideas contained in the original seemed to be lost. But such is life: if you have already given, then you have given.
Here is my opinion. Would I have liked to have seen Lucas' messy sequels with their abundance of midi-chlorians instead of what Disney offered? To be honest, yes. They would certainly cause controversy, but it would be his vision, complete and consistent from beginning to end. Instead, we got two directors pulling the story in different directions. However, at least he managed to create his own museum.
Perhaps the new trilogy will use Lucas's work. Simon Kinberg, one of the creators of Rebels, is working on it.
The Star Wars Celebration exhibition will be held in April, where news about the universe is expected.
