The head of Netflix revealed the new “Star Wars” from the director of “Starfighter”

In recent years, Netflix has become a true giant of the sci-fi genre. The platform has released hits such asStranger Things,Black Mirror,The Three-Body ProblemandLove, Death and Robots.

However, the streaming service's dominance in this genre has faced a serious obstacle. Key authors and project creators left the company. Among them are the authors ofStranger ThingsMatt and Ross Duffer, who left to work for Paramount, as well as Shawn Levy. The latter began collaborating with Disney.

In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos admitted that he himself pushed them to this decision.

The Duffer Brothers had been with us for a decade, but they didn't want to start creating new series right now. They really want to make large-scale feature films for cinemas. And I said to Matt and Ross, “You're great at what you do, and I think this is what you should do. You are 40 years old. I don’t want you to wake up at 60 and think, “You should have done this 20 years ago.” I'm very happy for them. Great success awaits them.

As for Shawn Levy, Sarandos noted an interesting point: “Sean essentially found himself in the same situation. The problem with exclusive contracts with people who have obligations to other studios is that you have to constantly compete for their time. And Sean will soon be making films based on theStar Warsuniverse. So it makes sense that he is now collaborating with Disney. I'm very happy for Sean. We will do many more projects together.”

Shaun Levy switches to franchises

Levy is currently preparing Star Wars: Starfighter, which is scheduled for release in May 2027.Judging by Sarandos' words, the director plans to make other films in the universe.

If Lucasfilm did indeed offer Levy a multi-film deal, it's hard to blame him for deciding to leave Netflix. The opportunity to develop Star Wars is an opportunity that few would turn down.

It is worth noting that afterStarfighterthe director will switch toGhost Rider. Perhaps in the coming years he will work onStar Warsand the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
