Star Wars will be shown in IMAX 70mm for the first time in 2027

Fans ofStar Warswill be treated to several releases next year - and not just TV series.

The Walt Disney Company and Lucasfilm previously confirmed that George Lucas' original film will return to theaters for a re-release to mark the franchise's 50th anniversary. Now it has become known that something unique has been prepared for the fans.

Not only has the studio confirmed that Shawn Levy's May-releasedStar Wars: Starfighterwill be shown in IMAX, but the originalStar Warswill be presented in that format for the first time ever. This was known earlier, but now it has been announced that it will be shown on 70mm IMAX film.

A New Hope re-release includes IMAX for the first time

It seems incredible that the fourth episode ofStar Warshas never been released in full IMAX format before. However, at the time of its release, this format was practically not used for artistic light. 70mm prints of A New Hope have been made in the past, but the upcoming re-release will be the first time Lucas' film has been shown in IMAX.

The first film in the franchise to be released in IMAX format was the 2002 filmStar Wars. Episode II: Attack of the Clones. However, no part of the series was filmed specifically for IMAX until Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), created with the participation of Disney. Since then, all films in the saga have either been partially filmed in IMAX format or shown in it.

The growth in popularity of IMAX is noticeable. Big studios are fighting for the format, and Christopher Nolan's Odyssey grossed almost $500 million worldwide in IMAX alone.

The re-release of A New Hope will take place on February 19, 2027.
