The fate of BioWare's DNA in The Old Republic is starting to look very real

[Wednesday, May 6, 2026]

The new Old Republic game is not technically Knights of the Old Republic 3. Lucasfilm has carefully clarified this.

But if the team continues to be filled with former BioWare veterans, people will continue to look at her with the same disdain as if she had just walked into the cantina wearing Revan's old cloak.

A new PC Gamer report reports a recent update to the team page Arcanaut Studios, revealing the names of the leading experts working onStar Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. In short: BioWare's influence is felt in this project.

Casey Hudson was just the beginning.

When Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic was announced at The Game Awards 2025, the title already caused a huge stir: Casey Hudson has returned to the era of the Old Republic.

This alone mattered. Hudson was the project director for the original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and later became one of the key figures in the creation of the Mass Effect trilogy. For those who still treat KOTOR as RPG holy writ - and let's be honest, that's the majority - this was enough for the announcement to immediately seem serious.

But according to Arcanaut Studios' updated page, Hudson isn't the only familiar name on the team.

PC Gamer notes that Chris Bain, Arcanaut's CFO, previously worked as director of business development at BioWare, and Ryan Hoyle, the studio's CTO, has worked as a programmer on BioWare games since 2000.

This is already a solid foundation. And new additions make this pattern even more noticeable.

More former BioWare veterans are joining the return of the Old Republic.

Among Arcanaut's top talent recently unveiled is Dan Fessenden, a senior technical designer whose background, according to PC Gamer, includes work on games such as Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, Dragon Age: Inquisition, and Dragon Age: The Veilguardand Anthem.

The team also includes Melanie Faulknor, Director of External Development, formerly a localization project manager and producer at BioWare, and Caroline Livingston, Director of Production and Performance, whose experience includes directing voice acting and producing games such as Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Anthem and Jade Empire.

The last part, although unobtrusively important. A game that seeks to recreate the feel of classic BioWare games requires more than just someone who understands combat systems or branching dialogue. We need people who understand the production process, voice-over directing, cinematic scene structure, and how to make characters feel like human beings and not just robots conveying a story.

Yes, and we should still talk about the Jade Empire'. Always.

This is not a direct sequel to KOTOR, but the game is clearly created for this audience.

The official position remains clear. Lucasfilm describes Fate of the Old Republicnot as adirect sequel or sequelbut as a new story with new characters, set in the era of the Old Republic. In its official interview Lucasfilm Games presented the project as a deep, cinematic, choice-based role-playing game created in the tradition of the legacy of the Old Republic.

This wording matters. This is not KOTOR 3. It's not pretending to be KOTOR 3. And it's absolutely the same thing: you go into the same temple, light the same candles and hope that no one notices the painfully familiar music in the background.

Arcanaut's official game page describes the project as a single-player story-driven action RPG where players take on the role of a Force user and make decisions that deepen their path to the light or darkness. This is not just a hint. It's essentially the promise of Old Republic RPGs, written in fresh ink.

Artwork can get interesting.

One name that stands out for a different reason is Pascal Blanchet, Arcanaut's artistic director. He's not from BioWare, but according to PC Gamer, his credits include work on Myst 4, the original Assassin's Creed, Splinter Cell: Conviction, and Far Cry: New Dawn.

This could be a very good sign. The era of the Old Republic should feel ancient, strange, majestic and dangerous - not just "modern Star Wars, but with all the 'old' robes." If Arcanaut can combine BioWare-style character drama with creepier, mythical sci-fi art direction, it might avoid feeling like the game is a a museum of nostalgia with combatanimations.

The Old Republic should feel like a place where civilization's history, secrets, and deeply flawed ideas are carved in stone.

The waiting is still the hardest part.

There is one important note: the release of Fate of the Old Republic is still a long way off.

Arcanaut Studios was founded in 2025, and the game does not yet have a release date. PC Gamer previously reported how Hudson dismissed talk of the game launching in 2030 or later, saying the game would release sooner because he "isn't getting any younger." This is a great quote, but it doesn't magically make the wait short.

However, this latest team announcement makes the project more concrete. It's not just "Casey Hudson is making a Star Wars RPG" anymore. This is a new studio that is assembling a team with a wealth of experience in exactly the tradition of character-driven role-playing games that this game is meant to honor.

For anyone who has followed the long, strange, and glorious history of Star Wars gaming, Fate of the Old Republic is one of the most anticipated projects right now.It can be ranked alongside the original KOTOR, SWTOR and the rest of the franchise's RPGs in our Complete list of every Star Wars game ever made.

The safest option remains cautious optimism.

What's the beauty? The Old Republic is back in the hands of people who understand why it mattered in the first place.
