3 Cool Star Wars References in Spider-Man: New Day
WARNING: Spoilers for Spider-Man: New Day follow.
Ever since Ned dropped the LEGO Death Star upon learning of the existence of Peter Parker's web-slinging alter ego in Spider-Man: Homecoming, Star Warshas played a low-key but sentimental role in the Marvel movie universe. Spider-Man.
Spider-Man: New Day is no exception, with three interestingreferences to All-Star Warsthat will appeal to fans of a galaxy far, far away. Here they are...
LEGO Chewbacca
When Peter shows up unexpectedly at MJ and Ned's housewarming party, he sneaks into Ned's room, where he sees a huge board with newspaper clippings and photographs of his encounters with Spider-Man. Next to the board is a table with a LEGO Chewbacca minifigure on it. Peter takes the minifigure and smiles.
Before Doctor Strange erased his memory, Peter and Ned built Star Wars LEGO sets for fun. In Homecoming, Ned holds a Palpatine minifigure and enthusiastically invites Peter to build a huge LEGO Death Star with him. InNo Way Home, after the universe forgets who Peter is, the lonely hero places a lone Palpatine minifigure on his dresser as a touching reminder of the friendship he left behind. Now, inA New Day, the LEGO minifigure once again serves as a tangible reminder of his connection to Ned.
Boyfriend
Eman Esfandi, who plays Ezra Bridger in the Ahsoka series, appears in one scene as MJ's boyfriend. His character has no name and is listed in the credits simply as "The Guy."
Although this role seems minor, it is "Boyfriend" that launches the evolution of Spider-Man's abilities. After Peter sees MJ and "Boyfriend" kissing at a party, his mental health reaches a new low, which in turn manifests itself physiologically as increased levels of spider hormones. This is an inversion of a similar storyline from Sam Raimi'sSpider-Man 2.In that film, Peter experiences a mental health crisis involving the love of his life and subsequently loses his powers. InA New DayPeter experiences a mental health crisis with the love of his life and subsequently gains powers.
The Empire Strikes Back
As Ned works with Spider-Man and MJ to help track down Sadie Sink's Jean Gray, he has several monitors in view. One of them is showing the film Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.
Specifically, the scene takes place early in the film at Echo Base on Hoth, as the Rebels prepare for an attack by Darth Vader and the Empire.
