Fans argue over Star Wars Jedi 3's open world

[Thursday, April 30, 2026]

The Star Wars Jedi games are arguably some of the best original franchise titles in recent years. The story of Cal Kestis continues to captivate longtime fans and newcomers alike.

If you haven't played it yet, Jedi: Survivor is not a full open world game, but rather a semi-open or linear adventure. The emphasis is on storytelling rather than location exploration. While this works well, there is ongoing debate about whether the next installment should be a true open world.

Will Star Wars Jedi 3 be an open world game?

On Reddit a gamer expressed the opinion that the next game in the Jedi series should be open world. And it's safe to say that fans are divided on this matter. In the comments, another user wrote:

I mean, if that's the developers' plan/vision... Of course. But it definitely doesn't have to be open world. In fact, I'd be happy if the game was shrunk down to the size of Fallen Order (which was also a huge game). I just want the best possible story, new character arcs, and top-notch gameplay. We already have Outlaws for the open world ofStar Wars.

“I hate the open world. Tell a concise, clear story. I don’t need pointless side quests,” another player added.

Most fans of the first two games believe that the third should not seriously change the concept. Gamers want to see more diverse locations:

Personally, I'd rather have multiple planets with smaller maps and varied biomes than larger maps and fewer planets.I hope we get a tropical biome and a temperate forest biome (maybe Alderaan?) in the next game.

When will Star Wars Jedi 3 be released?

The third game in the Star Wars Jedi series is actively being developed by Respawn Entertainment, although we have not yet received confirmation from the developers themselves. Perhaps the announcement will take place on Star Wars Day, May 4.

Release is predicted for 2027.
