When will Season 2 of Star Wars: Main Team be released?

[Wednesday, August 13, 2025]

The finale of the first season of "Star Wars" (StarWars: SkeletonCrew) received praise from both critics and fans who were tired of criticizing the Disney era of Star Wars.

But in terms of ratings, the series performed noticeably weaker than its predecessors, and this calls into question a potential continuation.

At the time of publication, Disney and Lucasfilm had notanannounced whether the series had been renewed for a second season. Despite the fact that the show was originally conceived as a complete one-season story, its creators - Jon Watts and Christopher Ford - have repeatedly said that they are ready to return to this universe.

What is known about the 2nd season of “The Support Team” at the moment:

  • There is no official extension.The company has not yet made a decision, and the future of the project depends on the financial and strategic plans of Disney+.
  • The creators are ready. Watts and Ford stated that they had already discussed ideas for a sequel. One option is a time jump to show the characters as adults.
  • The series was expensive. The budget for the season was about 136 million dollars (about 17 million per episode). It's cheaper than the failed Acolyte, but still too expensive for a project with low views.
  • Ratings Below Expectations “The Backbone” failed to chart on the Nielsen charts in its opening weeks, falling even short of “TheAcolyte.”
  • Positive reviews. Critics rated the series 91%, viewers - 81%. For many, this is “the best Star Wars series in recent years.”

When can we expect season 2?

If Lucasfilm does give the green light, the new season is unlikely to be released before the end of 2026. The production of the first season took more than a year and a half, and the studio's schedule is already full.

At the same time, there is a possibility that the Support Team will not return at all, and its characters will appear in other projects - especially in Dave Filoni's upcoming film about the New Republic.Fans, of course, are still hoping for a season 2, but it’s realistic to expect one of two things:

  • the sequel will be released in a couple of years with a time skip;
  • the series will remain a self-sufficient story, and the characters will migrate to other projects.

In the meantime, "The Backbone" is available on Disney+ and clearly claims to be the "best underrated series" in the world of "Star Wars" in recent years.
