Revival of "Star Wars": new films, cult heroes and big names

[Saturday, May 10, 2025]

It looks like the Star Wars universe is entering a new era. After a string of flops and criticism for obsessive inclusivity, Disney appears to have heard fans and is committed to strong writing, big names and the return of beloved characters. One of the main announcements was the new feature film Starfighter, in which Ryan Gosling will play the main role. The plot of the film will unfold five years after the end of the Skywalker saga and will mark the start of a completely new chapter in the chronology of the franchise.

Starfighter will be directed by Shawn Levy, who previously directed successful projects for Disney such as Deadpool and Wolverine, and also worked on the finale of Stranger Things. The film will tell the story of new heroes, and Gosling, according to unconfirmed reports, will play the pilot - a key figure in the new cast. Although details about his character are kept secret, the mere participation of an actor of this caliber caused a strong reaction from fans. The script was written by Jonathan Tropper (Banshee, See), and filming will begin in the fall. The premiere is scheduled for May 28, 2027.

In parallel with this, the animated series Maul: Lord of Shadows will appear on Disney+, in which the iconic villain Darth Maul will return at the center of the plot. The action will unfold after the Clone Wars, when Maul tries to regain power in the underworld and takes on apprentices. Sam Witwer will reprise his voice as the character, and the project is being helmed by a team of Lucasfilm animated series veterans, including writer Matt Michwetz (Rebels, The Bad Batch). The premiere is scheduled for 2026.

Fans can also expect the long-awaited continuation of the Ahsoka series. In the second season, viewers will see the entire Ghost team from the animated series Rebels reunite for the first time in live action. The main characters - Ezra, Hera, Sabine and others - will unite to confront the returning Thrawn. Hayden Christensen will reprise his role as Anakin Skywalker, perhaps as a force ghost or in the mythological role of the father who balances the force.A serious role will again be played by Beilan Skol, who will now be played by Rory McCann, replacing the deceased Ray Stevenson. Judging by the teasers, the power this season will take on a deep mythical dimension associated with ancient entities known as the Gods of Mortis.

Andor deserves special attention - the second season of this political thriller promises even more drama, intrigue and powerful direction from Tony Gilroy. The first season has already been recognized as one of the best Disney projects in recent years. The second season will premiere on April 22.

And finally, the film The Mandalorian and Grogu is scheduled for release at the end of 2025. At Star Wars Celebration, Pedro Pascal and Jon Favreau unveiled the animatronic Grogu to much applause. The project promises to become a new direction for the studio and, perhaps, will unite the disparate branches of the universe into a single concept.

Lucasfilm appears to be serious about regaining the trust of fans by focusing on quality, strong creative teams, and fresh ideas. The question remains: will these efforts mark the beginning of a true Star Wars renaissance, or will we once again fall into the trap of a pretty package without substance?
