BioWare publishes farewell message after closure
On October 21, 2026, the legendary Canadian studio BioWare officially announced its closure. The decision was made by parent company Electronic Arts as part of cuts of approximately 400 employees (about 3% of EA's workforce), including about 50 people at BioWare. Early development of the next Mass Effect game has been discontinued. The studio published an emotional farewell message in the form of an image on its social network account.

For over 30 years, BioWare has been more than just a studio. It was home to the storytellers, developers, and players who brought our worlds to life. Baldur's Gate. Neverwinter Nights. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. Dragon Age. Mass Effect. Anthem.
Now, after more than three decades of shared adventures, BioWare is shutting down and early development of the next Mass Effect title is ending.
There is nothing easy about writing these words. Our focus right now is on the incredibly talented team who put their hearts into these games and supporting each other through this transition. What generations of BioWare employees have created together is something worth celebrating and remembering. These games became so much more because you played them, argued about your choices, fell in love with the characters and made these worlds your own.
From all of us at BioWare - thank you for being the most important part of our story
The gaming community is actively reacting to the news: many thank the studio for unforgettable stories and worlds, others criticize the decisions of recent years. The studio's closure comes amid EA's recent move to private ownership following a $55 billion deal involving a Saudi sovereign wealth fund. The company previously announced plans to cut costs, including on research and development.
